Timeline: Six Days of War
Timeline of key battlefield events in the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and the surrounding Arab nations:
June 5, 1967: Striking first, the Israeli Air Force wipes out most of Egypt's warplanes before they can take off. Israeli forces move against Egyptian troops in the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip. After the Jordanian forces fire on the Israeli half of Jerusalem and beyond, Israel destroys Jordan's Air Force and sends troops to take Arab East Jerusalem.
June 6: Israel extends its air attack to Syria, gaining nearly complete control of the skies. Israeli forces encircle Jerusalem. Egyptian forces lose ground in the Sinai.
June 7: Israel takes full control of Jerusalem's Old City, and Jordanian forces are pushed from the West Bank across the Jordan River. A U.N.-arranged cease-fire between Israel and Jordan takes effect.
June 8: Israeli forces reach the Suez Canal, after the Israeli Air Force tears into retreating Egyptians. A cease-fire goes into effect in the evening.
June 9: After days of bombardment from Syria, Israel moves against Syrian forces in the Golan Heights.
June 10: With Israel taking the Golan Heights, a cease-fire is declared on that front.
The Six-Day War's death toll: Egypt, about 11,000 troops. Jordan, about 6,000. Syria, about 1,000. Israel, about 760.
